In the IPL opening pairs, the opening batters are very important (IPL). Opening batters are expected to help their side get off to a fast start in the powerplay of a Twenty20 event. Openers have the most incredible opportunity to hit huge runs in T20 matches after spending some time in the middle.
Praveen Kumar-Wasim Jaffer (IPL 2008)
RCB surprised everyone by batting pacer Praveen Kumar at the top of the order alongside Wasim Jaffer in the first tournament in 2008. Glenn McGrath bowled his opening over, and Kumar hit the second ball for a single to extra cover. After being bowled six times, he tried to work an excellent length ball over the infield on the right-hand side. In the end, Kumar could only locate a fielder on the outside of the circle. Despite Jacques Kallis’ 54, RCB lost by ten runs despite setting a target of 192. Four wickets from McGrath saw him awarded Player of the Match.
James Frankin-Sachin Tendulkar (IPL 2012)
You can’t conceive of a better IPL opening pairs than this one! As part of their quest to score 169 runs at Mohali in IPL match 33, Mumbai Indians (MI) sent left-arm bowler James Franklin to start with Sachin Tendulkar. On the other hand, Franklin was no slouch in the batting department; he once scored a century in a Test match. On the other hand, the New Zealander was always considered a middle-of-the-order bat. Franklin’s start to the inning was a minor triumph for MI.
An opening-stump 22 and 52 runs later; he had an excellent season. A stunning delivery from Azhar Mahmood put the Kiwi in a commanding position before he hit two more boundaries. Despite Franklin’s best efforts, the ball landed on the middle stump and swung late, squaring up the keeper. A half-century from Rohit Sharma helped MI reach 135 for 16, but they couldn’t go above that mark.
Ravichandran Ashwin-Mike Hussey (IPL 2013)
Ravichandran Ashwin, the IPL opening pairs star off-spinner, has also started the batting. When Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Kolkata in 2013, he had the opportunity to do so. Ashwin was paired with left-handed pitcher Mike Hussey, who hails from Australia. During the match, CSK chased a target of 120 when Ashwin produced 11 from 13 balls. When Lakshmipathy Balaji was bowled in the opening over, he flicked him over square leg for a four. Ashwin swept Sachithra over the square leg area to put the game out of reach.
Sunil Narine-Gautam Gambhir (IPL 2017)
It’s hardly shocking to see Sunil Narine open the KKR batting order these days, but it was in 2017. The first shot he took was a four from Sandeep Sharma to deep third man. He hit a six-over-long-off off the pacer’s second delivery, a length ball. After slamming Glenn Maxwell, Narine hammered Varun Aaron for six, six, and four straight boundaries. KKR’s pinch-hitter miscued Aaron’s short ball to deep midwicket in the same inning, and he got his retribution. However, he succeeded in his task, as Kolkata stormed to a powerplay score of 76 for 1. On 72 of 49, Gambhir was unbeaten as Kolkata cruised home in 16.3 overs with eight wickets remaining.
Rahul Tripathi-Jofra Archer (IPL 2018)
Jofra Archer and Rahul Tripathi opened the batting for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the 53rd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Jaipur. First, RR won the toss and elected to bat first, but Archer only lasted one over. His four-ball duck came when Umesh Yadav gloved him down the leg as the ball that slanted back in crowded him out.
After facing 58 balls and striking five fours and three sixes, Archer’s opening partner Tripathi was undefeated on 80 runs. As the RR innings ended, Shreyas Gopal picked off the RCB with a 4-for-16 performance. AB de Villiers, Moeen Ali, and Mandeep Singh were all bowled out for ducks by the leggie in Rajasthan’s 30-run win.
Conclusion
For any team to win a competition, the first two players on the field play a significant role. This is true even in the Indian Premier League (IPL), which lasts two months. Many clubs will be forced to reevaluate their batting order with new players on the roster.
