Adelaide is a name that is quite familiar to most cricket lovers. Adelaide Oval international cricket stadium is a living witness to many historical moments in the world of cricket. There are a lot of luminous legends who played many of their best innings here. Most of us know that it is situated in South Australia and maintained by the national cricketing board that is Cricket Australia (CA). This stadium is one of the continent’s best traditional cricket grounds for international test formats.

A short look at Adelaide Oval Cricket Stadium:

In the year 1871, the stadium was introduced to the cricketers just after the South Australian Cricket Association was formed. But after the late 90s, the stadium started getting well-prepared for hosting high-voltage international cricket matches. Right now, this ground is considered one of the best test grounds in the world. It has a capacity for nearly 60 thousand spectators. Since the beginning, Adelaide Oval has seen its most crowded match, with nearly 55,317 people in December 2017 witnessing the second Ashes Test match.

Generally, the stadium is known to be a batsman-friendly pitch and makes bowlers crave success. The pitch usually remains flat for the first three days of a Test match, being beneficial for the seamers. Afterward, it is better to bring the spinners in to play on the final two days. The Adelaide Oval developed its drop-in pitch in 2013. But this pitch is quite different from its typical nature. The first Test at the venue was played in December 1884 between England and Australia. England there beat Australia by eight wickets. Since then, a total of 82 matches have been played on this ground.

Among these, 40 matches have been won by the teams who chose to bat first, and those who chose bowling first have won 23 times. The Australian team itself has won 43 times out of the 80 international matches they have played at the Adelaide Oval. It is observed that the average score in the first innings at the Adelaide Oval is 381, which has been continued by 348, 273, and 212 in the next three innings, accordingly.

Test matches in Adelaide Oval:

This stadium witnessed many remarkable test matches in the past years. Let’s give a throw to the records and details that it brings on.

Highest total:

It was an innings between India and Australia where Sir Donald Bradman’s smashing innings took his team up to 674 against India in January 1948. It is the highest Test total at the Adelaide Oval till today. In this match, legendary Sid Barnes and Lindsay Hassett also scored brilliant centuries.

Highest individual score:

David Warner tackled the Pakistani bowlers hard, scoring 335 runs from 418 balls, hitting 39 fours and one huge six. The match was played in November 2019, where warner enlisted his name as the highest individual scorer in Tests at the Adelaide Oval.

Best bowling:

Albert Trott, one of the famous bowlers, took eight wickets, conceding 43 runs for Australia. It was a match against England in January 1985. There are other names as well who have also picked eight-fers at this venue in Tests. They are- Kapil Dev, Ashley Mallett, Geoff Lawson, and Jack White. However, Trott holds the record because, in the match, he gave away the minimum runs. Among the present international cricketers, Nathan Lyon’s 7/152 against India in December 2014 is the best bowling figure in Tests at the stadium till now.

Most runs:

Former legendary Australian captain Ricky Ponting has scored the most runs in Tests at the Adelaide Oval. Ricky scored 1,743 runs in 17 matches at an average of 60.10 on this pitch. He grabbed six hundreds and six fifties overall. Former Aussie captains Michael Clarke and Allan Border also made 1,414 and 1,415 runs in Tests at Adelaide. However, a few names have also brought up the four-figure Test runs at the Adelaide Oval- Justin Langer, David Warner, and Steve Waugh.

Most wickets:

Nathan Lyon made him the leading wicket-taker in Tests at the venue; taking 56 wickets in only 11 matches. He made an excellent economy rate of 2.61 here. Shane Warne, the former Australian magician-spinner; also picked 56 wickets at the Adelaide Oval. But unfortunately, he took 13 matches for it; and that did not allow him to lead.
