Pakistan Players Urge PCB Chief to ‘Pay Attention to Internal Affairs’

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) organized a Connection Camp at Lahore on September 23, 2024. PCB chair Mohsin Naqvi, Test coach Jason Gillespie, and limited-overs coach Gary Kirsten attended this event. Eight (8) senior players in Pakistan’s team were also at the meeting. The meeting sought to resolve current issues plaguing Pakistan cricket across formats.

Reports from the meeting suggests that players urged Pakistan’s cricket governing body to handle internal affairs better. Some senior players at the meeting cited denied contracts to play franchise cricket abroad among other issues as challenges they currently face. The PCB chief acknowledged concerns shared by the players and promised to fix major problems.  

PCB Discusses Lack of “Unity” Among Players

The PCB’s Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer confirmed that the PCB continues to discuss evident lack of unity among players in the national team. He shared his comments immediately after the Connection Camp meeting between PCB officials and players.

“Where the talk is of unity, it wasn’t only about the team,” the COO said. Naseer also shared details about other parts of the discussion between senior team players and PCB management:

“It was between the team and management and how we can work together to do things more successfully. These were part of the discussions. We talked about planning; we talked about workload management.”

The PCB COO said the cricket team will look to resolve current issues they face as they continue to identify them.

“The session was about this (low unity) that we openly and candidly accept and identify (issues) and ask for a commitment from each other, demand it, on how we can improve our performances and how we work together as a team. Our unanimous view was that we need to resolve this going forward and need to identify how we do it.”

Pakistan’s Head Coach Says More Discussions Imminent

Current Pakistan red-ball coach Jason Gillespie believes similar conversations held at the Connection Camp will continue. The coach believes these discussions will help Pakistan improve throughout departments to deliver on-field success:

“Because we’re new to the job, our job is to listen and learn and look to implement ways where we can be more effective as players, as a team, and as coaches,” Gillespie said. The coach also commented on the desire Pakistan cricketers show to do their best for the country’s national team:

“What was really clear today was the pride the Pakistan players have in playing for Pakistan and how they want to inspire the country. We’re on this journey together and we’ll do everything we can to help.”

Pakistan to Set Up a Committee for Inter-Team Communication

Reports suggest that a resolution during the Connection Camp among players demanded smoother communication across all PCB departments. The PCB leadership reportedly agreed to these demands and will set up a 2-man independent committee. This committee will aim to enhance communication between cricketers, management, and governing body officials or departments.

Babar Azam to Lead Pakistan at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Heightened rumours over the removal of Babar Azam as captain for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have been laid to rest. The PCB confirmed Azam will lead Pakistan until the Champions Trophy 2025 at least.

An insider familiar with the matter said current PCB chair Naqvi will not request any captaincy changes for now. The source also said Naqvi urged players to support whoever their skipper is ahead of challenging matches on schedule:

“Naqvi basically told the players that there would be no change in captaincy, and whoever they had as captains, the players must support them and play as one regardless of the format,” the source said.

Pakistan Upcoming Home Schedule 2024-25

Pakistan’s first home series in Tests vs Bangladesh was a shocking experience for the Men in Green. Pakistan cricketers failed to continue their impressive winning streak vs their visitors, slumping to a 2-nil defeat.

The team has a packed schedule for 2024 and next year amid the internal turmoil they currently face. Upcoming fixtures against England, West Indies, New Zealand, and South Africa will determine if they bounce back soon after years of horrible performances.
