Team India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal is facing disciplinary action after his involvement in an incident during the Colombo Test. Jaiswal and Sri Lanka’s Asitha Fernando have both been officially sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following an on-field incident.

Details of the Incident at Sinhalese Sports Club

The Sri Lankan national team was in desperate need of a breakthrough to secure an advantage during the 17th over of the Indian innings. The host nation was eager to halt by India’s openers at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo.

Sri Lankan speedster Asitha Fernando guided his team towards the expected result by delivering a ball that breached Jaiswal’s defense. The delivery clattered into Yashasvi’s stumps to send him out of action after a promising start with the bat.

Jaiswal could have simply walked away after failing to hold down his crease, but words were exchanged as the bowler celebrated the dismissal. The batter turned around and approached the celebrating bowler. Players from both teams had to swiftly intervene to separate the duo to ensure that the confrontation was halted in a matter of seconds.

What Regulation Was Breached During the Incident?

Both players were officially found guilty of breaching Article 2.12 of the established conduct guidelines by the match referee. This specific regulation covers inappropriate physical contact with a player, umpire, match referee, or support personnel during an active match.

What Financial Penalties Were Imposed?

Jaiswal and Fernando were handed a monetary fine equal to 25% of their respective match fees. The swift financial deduction can offer a stark reminder to the squads and help post a clear standard to limit future outbursts.

Demerit Points Added to Both Players’ Records

One demerit point was formally added to the disciplinary records of both Jaiswal and Fernando. Neither cricketer had committed any prior offenses within the preceding 24-month period, but they must exercise caution after receiving this sanction in Colombo.

ICC Statement Confirms Incident and Penalties

An official statement on the ICC’s website confirmed this altercation involving Jaiswal and Fernando:

“India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka bowler Asitha Fernando have been sanctioned by the ICC following their incident on the opening day of the second ICC World Test Championship fixture in Colombo,” the statement confirmed shortly after this incident. The international cricket regulator also detailed the nature of breaches in that altercation and appropriate sanctions:

“Both players were found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel,” the statement continued.

“Jaiswal and Fernando were fined 25 per cent of their match fee and were handed one demerit point each,” another section of the statement confirmed.

Did Both Players Accept the Sanctions?

The match officials swung into action to ensure absolute compliance with the rules after repeated emotional outbursts in Test cricket.

“The incident occurred in the 17th over of India’s batting innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal. The India batter walked towards Fernando and the two exchanged words, after which Fernando moved his head towards Jaiswal. In response, Jaiswal leant in, resulting in their heads making contact,” a section of the ICC statement detailed how both players reacted during the incident:

Several senior umpires in the match setup leveled the formal charges after this incident. Both players admitted their offenses directly to the match referee:

“Both players admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for formal hearings,” the statement read.

Their quick acceptance of the proposed sanctions was enough to make a formal disciplinary hearing unnecessary.

Jaiswal Reacts on Social Media After Accepting Sanctions

Yashasvi took a combative stance online after accepting the official penalties during the game. He replied to a video analysis of the incident and insisted Fernando crossed a line to warrant his reaction. Jaiswal also maintained that his team would always fight and reply to provocations.
