Cricket is set to return to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028. The sport’s historic return to one of the world’s top competitions comes after an absence spanning 128 years. Men’s and Women’s cricket tournaments will be on schedule at this event, but each will have only six (6) teams competing.

The small selection of teams to take part in the upcoming Olympics has raised eyebrows, as fan conversations continue to garner attention ahead of the event. Cricket is one of the world’s most-diverse sports, and some sets of fans believe six teams will not be enough to represent its wealth of talent and competitiveness.

Let us see decisions that went into the choice of six teams per gender-based competition and how cricket may have a brighter future in successive Olympics.

When Was the Last Time the Olympics Hosted a Cricket Competition?

Cricket was last played at the Summer Olympic Games in the year 1900. A two-day match saw Great Britain face France in the only sole encounter in that competition. That contest bears a resemblance to the present-day limited-overs games that laid the groundwork for cricket’s return to the Olympics.

When Did the International Olympic Committee Approve Cricket’s Return to the Olympics?

The International Olympics Committee okayed cricket’s return to the Summer Olympics in April 2025. This IOC resolution for cricket’s re-entry signals a major expansion in sport competitions available at the Olympics.

What is the Format Chosen for the Six-Team Cricket Competition at the Olympics?

Cricket at the LA 2028 Olympics will adopt a T20 format and see teams decide their finishing spot over twenty overs each per match. Men’s and Women’s tournaments will see six teams featuring 15 players each for this showpiece.

What is the Athlete Quota for Cricket at the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics?

All gender-based cricket events at LA 2028 will have a 90-athlete quota. 90 athletes split into six places means only 15 players are allowed to feature for each team at the LA games. Analysts expect these games to host double-headers at one venue throughout the duration of cricket matches.

Will the US Cricket Team Receive an Automatic Spot as the Host Nation?

The US cricket team may receive an automatic spot as tournament hosts ahead of teams arranged according to ICC rankings. However, the US must still meet performance standards of the ICC and IOC to be eligible for this slot.

Cricket’s governing body usually adopts an ‘only the best’ approach to ensure team bring their A-game to secure future spots at other Olympic Games.

Did the ICC Propose Team Selection Based on Current Rankings?

The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently proposed using T20I rankings within a specific timeline to shortlist participating nations for the upcoming Summer Olympics in 2028. The rankings will reward teams who performed at a consistent level in international T20 leagues and bilateral series.

ICC T20I rankings chosen to select participating teams at the Olympics will also provide a clear and objective path to squads who deserve a qualifying spot.

Will Full-Member ICC Nations Miss Out on the Summer Olympics?

Several full-member ICC nations may not feature at the historic return of cricket to the Olympics. Teams like Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand, and South Africa may fall outside top rankings to secure a spot in LA.

West Indies Has a Stronger Chance to Feature at the Summer Olympics in 2028

Teams like the West Indies seem to have a better chance of securing an automatic qualification spot compared to standalone teams. Cricket West Indies (CWI) organises cricket teams from countries with independent National Olympic Committees (NOCs). Caribbean players will have a better chance of taking part in the Olympics if their team jointly features at the games.

What is the Match Format for Cricket at the 2028 LA Olympics?

The 6-team tournament follows a round-robin phase where each side will play five (5) guaranteed matches before a knockout phase involving four teams. Ensuring five games per team will give cricket fans enough matches to see their favourite stars lock horns to deliver electrifying limited-overs action.

ICC Exec Stresses the Importance of Cricket in Future Summer Olympics

ICC Chief Executives’ Committee member Sumod Damodar stresses the importance of sporting elite converging at the LA 2028 for the longevity of cricket as a sport. He urged for qualification criteria to be finalised soon to allow low-ranked sides enough time to improve and aim to secure another spot for cricket in Brisbane 2032.
