Many legendary cricket players throughout history never got to play a Test match until their careers ended. A combination of factors like selection issues, poor timing, and dynamics of certain eras ensured some popular cricketers had no Test career. Let’s see some of the most popular players who succeeded in limited-overs cricket but failed to register a notable red-ball career.

1. Padmakar Shivalkar

The iconic leftie spinner played for Bombay (now Mumbai) for nearly 3 decades before retirement and bagged 589 First-Class wickets as a player. He never got the chance to play for India as a Test cricketer, as his rise in form coincided with the monopoly of Bishan Singh Bedi in the national squad.

2. David Hussey

Aussie David Hussey blasted home over 14,000 runs at a +50 average in First-Class runs. He also took part in ODIs and played T20 cricket regularly but never got a Test call-up. Hussey was consistent throughout his white-ball career but Baggy Green selectors never saw him worthy of a place in their red-ball lineups.

3. Yuzvendra Chahal

Chahal has 100+ caps for India in ODI and T20I cricket combined, but he has never represented the team in Test conditions. The talented leg-spinner has been in India’s national team circle for nearly a decade, and some fans believe his chances in long-format cricket are now over.

4. Kieron Pollard

Windies batting sensation Kieron Pollard went on a solo revolution of middle-over batting in ODIs and T20Is. The cricketer has 100+ appearances in limited-overs cricket and remains one of franchise cricket’s top talents ever. Pollard always expressed his desire to feature in long-format cricket but has not got the chance so far.

5. Franklyn Stephenson

Stephenson is another Windies player without a Test cap throughout his remarkable career. He was one of the team’s top pace-bowling all-rounders in the 1980s but only got a chance in limited-overs cricket before his retirement.

6. Sanju Samson

India’s iconic wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson has been an electrifying presence for his country in the T20I and ODI performances. However, the cricketer is yet to play any Test match in his career. Analysts continue to spin many talking points over Samson’s continued absence from long-format cricket, and fans are yet to see what he has to offer in the game’s longest format.

7. Fawad Ahmad

Australian leg-spinner Fawad Ahmad is another player who never got to play Test cricket throughout his career. He arrived in the country as an asylum seeker before his cricket skills earned call-ups to the T20I team. Some analysts suggest that Ahmad appeared on the international scene as a late-bloomer, suggesting that this stifled his chances of securing a Test career.

8. Garth Le Roux

Le Roux was a top pacer in World Series Cricket and First-Class games throughout his career. He never got to feature for the South Africa Test team until his retirement and remains one of the most popular players without an appearance in long-format cricket.

9. Ryan ten Doeschate

Ten Doeschate was one of the Netherlands’ top all-rounders during his playing career. He excelled in First-Class cricket and was a top pick for Essex during his playing days. His remarkable ODI career and significant contribution to limited-overs cricket were not enough to earn him a Test cap.

10. Rajinder Goel

Hundreds of remarkable Indian cricketers at domestic level go through their careers without earning a Test call-up. One of such players is Rajinder Goel, who went through a major phase of his career expecting a long-format cap, but he never got one.

He is on record as a top Ranji Trophy performer in his day with over 750 wickets as a leftie spinner but never got the chance to represent India in Whites.

11. Vincent Barnes

Barnes was a remarkable bowler for South Africa during his career and ensured pacey balls unsettled opposition batters during games. He snatched 323 wickets as a First-Class player and delivered these scalps at a decent 11.9 average.

Barnes could not represent South Africa’s main Test team for political reasons, and he retired shortly after these issues were resolved.

12. Amoi Muzumdar

Muzumdar received recognition early into his career as one of India’s top batters during the 1990s. He bagged over 11,000 First-Class runs that included a 250 on his debut. However, established middle-order players like Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, and Rahul Dravid ensured Muzumdar did not get a Test career.

The talented star excelled at domestic level for 2 decades but failed to break into India’s long-format lineup before retiring.
