Indian skipper Rohit Sharma confirmed that he might miss the first out of the five-match test series in the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 against Australia due to personal reasons. After a 25-run loss against New Zealand in the third and final test match at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the 37-year-old said that he is unsure of his participation in the first test. Furthermore, he revealed the reasons behind canceling India’s 3-day warm-up match at WACA stadium.

Jasprit Bumrah, who is the vice-captain of the Indian Test cricket team might lead the series opener match starting on November 22 (Friday) in Perth. Also, it could be a valuable opportunity for the debutant Abhimanyu Easwaran who is expected to play the opening batter’s role along with Yashasvi Jaiswal in Rohit’s absence.

Why Rohit Sharma won’t play first test in Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25?

Rohit Sharma and his wife Ritika Sajdeh are eagerly awaiting the birth of their second child at the same time when the Border Gavaskar Trophy commences. As a consequence, the Hitman would stay at home and wouldn’t be able to participate in the first test.

Rohit Sharma About his Participation in Border Gavaskar Trophy

During the post-match press conference, Rohit Sharma expressed his uncertainty about traveling to Australia for the first test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy:

“No! At present, I am not completely sure whether I’ll be traveling to Australia or not. But, let’s wait and see. Right now, Fingers crossed!” Rohit Sharma said.

India’s Warm-Up Match Cancelled Ahead of Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25

Initially, India was supposed to take part in a three-day warm-up match against India A at WACA, but now the schedule has been altered to a practice session. Moreover, India A will be completing their four-day test match against the Aussies at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on November 10 before journeying to Perth.

Earlier Rohit Sharma and his team were planned to depart for Perth in two separate batches on November 10 and 11. Also, it was expected that the Indian captain would get a paternity leave and return home in between due to personal reasons.

Rohit Sharma About Cancelled Warm Up Match for India

Rohit Sharma confirmed that the warm-up match has been canceled citing the workload management issues by revealing noteworthy facts about the match simulation:

“Yeah! Instead of a practice game, we planned for a realistic game with India A. With a 19-member squad, we would be left with only an allocated period of three days after reaching Australia. I am not sure how much workload can be managed in these three days for every one of us to get prepared.

As a management, our opinion is that we could have had a match simulation where batters would get an opportunity to spend extra time in the middle as well as for bowlers to bowl a lot of deliveries. This could something bring out more confidence rather than playing a practice match. Moreover, the game duration isn’t a problem at all. We have been playing a lot of cricket, and it is all about spending some time in the middle.

For instance, if a batsman gets out, he has to spend in the dugout throughout the day and doesn’t get too much exposure. In case of a match simulation, the batsman can play 50 to 70 balls and if we feel that he has contributed enough, we can retire him and send another batsman to the crease, which is the main plan.”

Furthermore, Rohit Sharma clarifies that the squad should be completely prepared to tackle the bouncier conditions in Australia:

“Exactly! We want to make use of these three days at WACA and I feel this is the best way our batters and bowlers can get their workload managed,” Rohit Sharma added.

Jasprit Bumrah as Team India Captain in BGT 2024: Overall Verdict

This is the second time Jasprit Bumrah would step into the captaincy role after two years. Earlier, in 2022, the Indian key pacer led India in the rescheduled fifth and last test match against England in Edgbaston, where his team lost by 7 wickets.

After losing the 3-match home test series to New Zealand with a clean sweep of 0-3, India is in a must-win situation to win all five matches of the BGT. In actuality, the forthcoming Australian tour is the only hope for Indians to keep their chances alive of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final.

However, it is a huge blow as Team India couldn’t afford their captain Rohit Sharma missing out on even a single match in the BGT.

Although Bumrah has experience leading his team in the longest format of cricket on overseas grounds, a heavy loss to England poses questions about his captaincy in a crucial phase of the WTC 2023-25 cycle.

Finally, the BGT 2024-25 will be crucial for both India and Australia to strengthen their top two spots in the WTC points table.
