The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won this year’s IPL final, adding another title to their trophy-laden cabinet. The CSK IPL final 2023 win came courtesy of a 5-wicket victory over 2022 champions, the Gujarat Titans (GT).
CSK IPL final 2023 victory also equalled the record of most title wins in the competition’s history. With five IPL trophies so far, CSK goes level with the Mumbai Indians (MI) on all-time championship wins.
The rain didn’t let off, but CSK’s resolute performance saw them pull off a last-ball spectacle after a last-minute rescheduling. Their special performance eclipsed GT’s 214/4 score line, even with some late drama from the 2022 debutant champions.
Major Events in the Nail-Biting CSK vs GT Final 2023 Match
CSK’s openers faced few balls before both teams had to leave the pitch due to pouring rain. The rain will continue for over 2 hours, delaying major proceedings in the final. Ruturaj Gaikwad came on the scene to deliver an impressive performance along with Devon Conway. Both CSK stars eked out 72 runs after six overs on the back of fierce resistance from GT.
Noor Ahmad (GT) went on to deliver a stellar performance, removing both CSK players in the 7th over. Shivam Dube (32 not out) will drive Chennai to a close race with GT, but it wasn’t enough to keep MS Dhoni and Ambati Rayudu from getting removed by Mohit Sharma.
Chennai had to score 13 runs form the final over after Sharma’s dogged performance to evict Dhoni and Rayudu. Sharma conceded 3 runs after four deliveries, reducing CSK’s needed tally to 10.
Up stepped Ravindra Jadeja for CSK to deliver a six over Sharma’s head. Shortly after, Jadeja sealed the fame with the boundary to send CSK’s fans wild in the stands and secure their fifth IPL crown after sixteen seasons.
New Records after the IPL Final 2023
The IPL Final 2023 saw several players and both teams set impressive records or break existing feats. Some of the most fascinating records (and one unwanted feat) from the CSK vs GT Final 2023 games are:
Top 5 players to score two half-centuries in an IPL final overall – Wriddhiman Saha
Wriddhiman Saha is now among the top five players to score half-centuries in more than one IPL final. The star batter recorded his second 50+ score at IPL final 2023 after achieving the feat in a previous season.
Top players to successfully chase down a total in an IPL final – Ravindra Jadeja
Ravindra Jadeja’s dominance in the final over sent him into the top five player rankings for successful chases in a championship match. Sharma is also ranked third among players to score winning runs for their franchise at an final.
Top three highest batter score in an IPL final – Sai Sudharsan
Sai Sudharsan is the third cricketer to record a high batting score at an IPL final. The player was able to score 96 runs at this year’s final to become third in the all-time rankings. Sudharsan’s batting return puts him just behind Wriddhiman Saha (115 in 2014 final) and Shane Watson (117 in 2018 final)
Top four Orange Cap and Purple Cap holder from one IPL team – Gujarat Titans
Shubman Gill (Orange Cap) and Mohammed Shami (Purple Cap) added Gujarat Titans to the all-time Orange and Purple Cap joint holder rankings.
Top three runs scored in an IPL season – Shubman Gill

Top team to win an IPL final against different teams – Chennai Super Kings
The CSK team has won their five IPL titles against different teams in each final. They beat the:
- Mumbai Indians (2010),
- Royal Challengers Bangalore (2011),
- Sunrisers Hyderabad (2018),
- Kolkata Knight Riders (2021), and
- Gujarat Titans (2023)
Top five players to win an Orange Cap and MVP in the same IPL season – Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill bagged this year’s Orange Cap and MVP in the IPL final 2023, moving him into fifth in the all-time rankings.
Top players to lose three successive IPL finals – Mohit Sharma
Mohit Sharma equalled one of the IPL’s most unwanted records after GT went down to CSK in the final. The player’s IPL final losses in 2023, 2015, and 2011 equals Virat Kohli’s terrible record of three championship defeats in premier league history. Kohli’s trio of IPL final losses all came with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Sharma’s losses have come with different IPL teams
