A string of poor results at IPL 2025 with the bat has put Team India captain Rohit Sharma at the center of heavy criticism. The former Mumbai Indians (MI) captain has been able to record only 21 runs in 3 matches so far at IPL 2025. His underwhelming record included a blank (0 runs) vs the Chennai Super Kings, 8 runs vs the Gujarat Titans, and 13 runs against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Sharma’s poor run of form has left MI in search of a miracle to revamp their opening chances with the bat.
Will Rohit Sharma Bounce Back from His Poor Run of Form at IPL 2025?
Legendary MI batter Sharma has had his fair share of ups-and-downs in the IPL. The star batsman continues to struggle while attempting to recreate his season best performance (538 runs in IPL 2013). However, the 6-time IPL winner always finds a way to step up in tough moments, and will almost certainly make his mark in 2025 franchise cricket. .
MI Batting Coach Downplays Sharma’s Struggles
Kieron Pollard is currently MI’s batting coach and believes the criticism directed at Rohit Sharma is harsh and should be discarded. The former teammate of embattled Sharma described MI’s opening batter as a “legend of the game” and believes he should not be under pressure to perform in upcoming games:
“I’ve played alongside Rohit since under-19 cricket and he has etched his name in history. He has performed in different situations, different formats of the game. He’s a legend of the game in his own right. He has earned the right to now enjoy his cricket and not be pressurized in certain situations. So, let’s not judge on a couple of low scores,” Pollard said.
Things “Slipping Away” from Rohit Sharma – Sanjay Manjrekar
Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes Rohit Sharma is finding it difficult to get big-hitting performances at IPL 2025:
“Rohit Sharma is clearly going through a phase. He’s not the Rohit Sharma of, say, 3 to 4 years ago. He’s at a stage in his career where he has to push himself every morning – train hard and be at his best – because things are slipping away for him. He’s still relying on his natural talent and instincts.”
New MI opening batting lineup “unconvincing” – Manjrekar
Manjrekar went further to fault MI’s batting lineup, tagging the team’s hitting squad as unconvincing:
“Ryan Rickelton, being a South African, will take time to adjust to Indian pitches. Very few South African batters, barring AB de Villiers and Heinrich Klaasen, have truly flourished on Indian pitches. So we’ll have to give him time. Apart from that, Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav, along with Robin Minz and some of the other players, form the batting line-up. However, to me, it still looks a little unconvincing,” Manjrekar added.
Manjrekar believes Mumbai still on course to win IPL 2025
Manjrekar concluded his interview with the suggestion that MI still has a shot at the IPL 2025 title. The 5-time champions have been in terrible form of late and recently fell to another shocking defeat. However, Manjrekar believes the team will bounce back in forthcoming games to snatch the title like they did over a decade ago:
“The dew never came in, which made Mumbai’s job even more difficult. But despite all that, two losses are quite typical for Mumbai Indians. They still seem to be on the right track to go on and win the title.”
MI has had a rough opening set of games in previous seasons before bouncing back to clinch the title. Fans can remember MI’s opening results in the 2014 season mirrors their performance in 2025. However, the team can turn things around in a heartbeat and surprisingly pop up at a playoffs and final spot.
