The pitch of a cricket ground is rectangular. The area of the ground is generally 22 years having 20.12 m length and 3.05 m width. After all, a turf wicket will vary on the overall dimension. It is the most important element. Now for the different aspects of a pitch, the following information can be considered.
1) Length of one wicket from another should be 20.12 meters.
2) There should be a 17.68-meter distance from one crease to another.
3) The distance between the two edges must be 22.56 meters.
4) During the game total width used is 3.05 meter.
5) And finally the total width of the playing area must be 3.66 meter
Now let us find out the steps used for cricket pitch markings. There must be four corners marked in the field, and the steps of marking are based on this theory.
Step 1: The width of the pitch must be 10 ft wide. With the help of a string, the line put the bowling crease down on the width of the field.
Step 2: After that make a mark or scratch to find out the center, The center of the wicket will be 5 feet from both the edges for a full-sized pitch. After that measure, the middle left and right and make an under-dash on both the sides using tape.
Step 3: Now remove the marking stick and draw 8’8” line as recommended by ECB & mark within the two outer dashes.
Step 4: It is time now to create a popping crease. To do that, start with the corner & draw a dash on both the corners for moving the string four ft. forward. To make sure that it has been done correctly, measure 4 ft back from the bowling crease and then use white marking to mark the string line at its back to 12 ft. across. This will finally create a popping crease.
Step 5: Now add protected area dashes on both sides of the center stump. These protected area dashes can be drawn in 5 ft. or 1 ft.
Step 6: The same process must be repeated for another pitch end.
Step 7: After that, put the measured 4 ft bowling line in a peg and extend it on the pitch up to another bowling line. The size of each line is 8 ft in total.
Step 8: Adding these five ft. & 2 Ft. area dashes and both sides of stumps to put in the stump hole.
Step 9: As a final step, make the stump holes aim for the middle of these holes.
To have a better understanding of these steps, the first one needs to know the different elements of a cricket pitch. A cricket pitch consists of various elements like stumps white lines. To understand the measurements, first, understand the elements that need to be measured.
The Crease
Crease is the pitch of the field marked by white lines during a game. To serve different purposes, there are three different kinds of pitches available
- Bowling Crease: In a game bowling crease is the perpendicular one to the length of the pitch. Wickets are put on this line. It shows the actual beginning point of the pitch.
- Popping Crease: A crease parallel to the bowling crease and laying in front of it is called a popping crease. The purposes it can serve are
- “No Ball” of Front foot: If the bowler’s front leg completely crosses the popping crease while delivering a ball, it will be declared as a front foot “No Ball”. It is the key feature of using a popping crease.
- Safe zone line for the Batsman: While playing, at least a few parts of the bats’ man, including the bat the player is holding, must be inside the popping crease. Thus, it is used as the safe zone for the batsman.
- Return Crease: A crease is perpendicular to the bowling crease and marked by two parallel lines. It is drawn on both sides of the wicket. It can be used for two purposes.
- Wide Ball: If the ball thrown by the bowler is not much wide to play, it will be declared as a “Wide ball.” Return creases are used to indicate that.
- Back Foot “NO Ball”: If the back leg of the bowler crosses the line of return crease, it will be termed a back-foot “No Ball.”
Wickets
2 sets of wickets are also mandatory for any cricket pitch. A wicket holds three stumps and two balls. The height of stumps is usually 28 inches & the minimum thickness is 1.375 inches which can be upgraded to a maximum of 1.5 inches. When measuring the wicket, 9 inches will be the total width, and the length of bails will be 4.3125 inches. And last but not least length of the spigot of the bails is from 0.8125 inches to 1.375 inches.
Measurements of cricket Pitch:
Cricket pitch is the most important element of the game as all the actions will take place there. The distance between two wickets, as well as the length of the pitch, is 22 yards. The length of a pitch is 22 yards, which is the distance between two wickets on either side of the pitch. The width is 10 Ft. The perfect dimension is as important as the dimension of a crease itself. The Length of the return crease from the middle stump is 1.32 meters, the distance between the popping crease and stump is 1.22 meters, and the distance between 2 return creases is 2.64 Mt.
Maintenance & Preparation:
Among the Laws of Cricket, Law 9 has set the rules related to covering the preparation and maintenance of the playing area or cricket pitch, let’s say. The measurements that can be taken for preparation and maintenance of any playing area are:-
- Phasing out uncovered pitches.
- To take care of the pitch and save it from rain or dew, it needs to be covered.
- The captain of the batting team may request for rolling of the pitch but only for 7 minutes maximum.
- Before rolling the pitch must be swept out to avoid damages from rolling in debris.
- Before starting the match, the groundsman can mow the pitch, but once the match has started, the pitch can be mowed under the umpires’ supervision.
- It is the responsibility of umpires to clean out the bowlers’ and batsmen’s foot holes.
Lastly,
To know about pitch markings, you should be aware of others related to it too!
